Devices for Physical Rehabilitation

Interferential

Interferential

Used as a treatment for the symptomatic relief and management of chronic and post-traumatic acute pain. It is also indicated as a supplemental treatment in the management of post-surgical pain where it not only reduces the sensation of pain; it acts to accelerate the inflammatory or healing process. Interferential devices differ from TENS in that they stimulate the deeper tissues over a broader region.

Galvanic

Galvanic

Galvanic stimulation is most useful in acute injuries associated with major tissue trauma with bleeding or swelling. In contrast to the alternating currents of the TENS and Interferential, the Galvanic Stimulators apply direct current. This direct current when applied to the treated area has the ability to change blood flow. Comparable to applying ice, the area under the electrodes results in reduced circulation and therefore reduces swelling. Similarly, the negative node is comparable to applying heat and it is said to increase circulation which acts to speed healing of the tissues.

Electrical Muscle Stimulators

Electrical Muscle Stimulators

EMS is commonly used for post-orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, strengthening programs, gait training, shoulder subluxation and reduction of muscle spasm. For rehabilitation, it is used to maintain or increase range of motion, prevent or retard disuse atrophy, muscle re-education, relaxation of muscle spasm, increase circulation, prevention of venous thrombosis. It is characterized by a low volt stimulation targeted at motor nerves to cause a muscle contraction. Contraction/relaxation of muscles has been found to effectively treat a variety of musculoskeletal and vascular conditions.

Micro-Current

Micro-Current

These devices differ from TENS and Interferential in that they are commonly used in acute cases such as with sports injuries, post-op care, swelling, arthritis, TMJ disorders, and some chronic conditions to control pain and promote healing.

The sub-sensory current utilizes micro-amps that simulate the naturally occurring electrical impulses to assist in decreased pain and helps with the healing process.
